INTRODUCTION LETTER
Hello. My name is John Kincheloe, but you can call me “Kinch.” I will be your instructor for the upcoming history course and I look forward to working with you. I presently teach Western Civilization, World History, United States History, Virginian History, and Local History at Northern Virginia Community College - Loudoun.
I am a native Virginian and proud of it. I
attended Hampden-Sydney
College for my BA, then moved to Colorado to
attempt the life of a Ski Bum before returning to my studies
at James Madison University and University of Connecticut. In
the process I managed to hike, bike, and paddle over 12,000
expedition miles, crossing the United States by my own power
four times. I specialize in Maritime and Colonial Atlantic
History. I am married to Casey
Berthelot Kincheloe. My progeny are Charlie
and Caroline. I have a passion for the outdoors and the
high seas. I hope to save the world someday, but for now
I am just loving life. Go to my "home" page for contact
information, Office hours, and syllabi and my "about me" page
for more about my passions.
ABOUT THE Online/Hybrid
COURSES:
Online and Hybrid courses are obviously not like
standard history courses where students meet with the entire
class on a bi-weekly basis. Rather, you yourself will be
responsible for keeping up with the weekly readings and
assignments. Basically, you will only get out of this class
what you put into it. Please do remember that it is YOUR
responsibility to keep copies of all of your coursework and
graded assignments. Make sure to refer to the course schedule
often!
CONTACTING ME:
Online and on the ground instruction is a learning experience
for all concerned, and we may hit some snags along the way.
Staying in touch with me and informing me as soon as problems
arise is the best way to keep things running smoothly. I am
here to help you get as much as possible out of this course,
so let me know if you need anything. And thanks in advance for
your patience should any bumps in the road arise.
I am on campus and randomly online when you least expect it. The best way to contact me is by e-mail jkincheloe@nvcc.edu I check it at least once a day Mon. – Fri. [In the e-mail or voice mail be sure to let me know which course you are in.]
There is no formal in-person orientation currently scheduled for courses, but review all course materials, and then e-mail me any questions you may have.
Finally, please remember to make frequent use
of the materials in Kinch's
Writing Guide.
Again, welcome to the course and best wishes.
–Kinch
