Exam Review Sheet (updated 4/23)


Modern World Civilization II


There are two exams for this course.  The Midterm Exam deals with material from the first half of the course and the Final Exam deals with material from the second half.  Each exam will feature a 20 item Map section, a Chronology section, and 1 essay.


These are open note, open book exams.  You will have 1:30 minutes to complete the exam.  All the work must be of your own effort and will be checked for plagiarism.  Any indications of plagiarism or other accounts of academic dishonesty will result in immediate failure of the course.

1 - Map Section:  (20%)

You will be given 2 lists of 10 locations from the following list and asked to place them on a blank maps (link) of the Western World.

II - Chronology: (15%)

--Drawn from historical events and people covered in lecture.     (Review of Lecture Notes on the syllabus may be helpful.)--- 

-matching = You will be given a list of people, events, etc. to be matched to its associated Culture/Region. (Context)

-timeline  = You will be given a list of events or people to be put  in order of when they happened.   (Causation)

III – Essay: (65%)

You will be given 1 out of the following list of essays and asked to answer it as an argumentative essay.


-Citations are not required but documents and quotes must be clearly attributed.

-700 word maximum word count.
-Spelling and grammar will be considered.

-Plagiarism policy applies...this must be a product of your own efforts.


 

Midterm Exam essay questions:

-As maritime trade expanded around the world reactions in the East and West contrasted sharply.  Make an argument explaining the differing reactions of Western Powers (European)  vs Eastern Powers (China/Japan) to the opening of greater trade?  Use at least 1 primary sources from the syllabus to discuss the topic. 

-Make an argument explaining how the Colombian Exchange impact populations around the globe?  Overall did this exchange serve as a net benefit or detriment to the worlds population?  Be sure to address multiple societies/countries.
Use at least 1 primary sources from the syllabus to discuss the topic. 

-In the late 18th and early 19th centuries a cascade of revolutions rippled across the Atlantic World.  Make an argument explaining how new ideologies from the 17th and 18th centuries impact or lead to these movements?

Use at least 2 primary sources from the syllabus to discuss the topic. 

-Kinch has argued that the Industrial Revolution is a direct outgrowth of Colonialism.  Make an argument explaining how the America's, Africa, and the East brought about Industrialization in Europe. 

Use at least 2 primary sources from the syllabus to discuss the topic. 



Final Exam essay questions:


-In the mid 20th century totalitarian regimes rose to power across the globe.  Why did the rise of totalitarianism meet with minimal opposition in the 1920s-40s?
Use at least 1 primary source from the syllabus to discuss the topic.

-Kinch argued that there exists a global economy that is a direct outgrowth of 19th and 20th century movements.  Explain and trace the path to globalism across the last 200+ years.
Use at least 1 primary source from the syllabus to discuss the topic.

-What was the long term impact of colonial expansion?  Be sure to deal with both colonizers from multiple continents and colonies on multiple continents in addressing the question.
Use at least 1 primary source from the syllabus to discuss the topic.

-Across the semester this course covered the trajectory of the Euro West and Asiatic East as competing regions.  How has 19th and 20th century interactions between western and eastern powers shaped the global economic and political world of the 21st century?
