Paper 1- Argumentative Essay on Colonial Settlement

 

Question:  Which European power was most effective in setting up colonies?.  Why?

 Purpose

Knowledge:

After doing this assignment you will have a clear understanding of the early development of colonial America and the complexity of various approaches.

Skills:

After doing this assignment you should be able to:

• Synthesize multiple sources to concisely create an effective argument.
• Use evidence from both primary and secondary sources to prove your argument.
• Analyze material based on historical context.
• NOTE= remember this is a history course, not a literature course.
  

 

Task

1. Read A Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies (Primary Source)
2. Read all the textbook readings through British North America (ch. 3.)  (Secondary Source)
3. Write an argumentative essay of no more than 700 words that answers the following question:

 
Based on ALL your new found knowledge of the era and using Las Casas's Destruction of the Indies, make an argument explaining which European power was most effective in setting up colonies.  Why? Make sure to contrast with one or two other European countries.

(You may take any stance you want, but your argument must be original and well proven.)

 

 Tips

• Remember this is a history course, not a literature course.
